Blue Dog CD teaching children safe behaviour around dogs  Blue Dog cd

Children are lively, noisy and often impulsive, it's in their nature to be joyful and spontaneous and we love them for it (except when we're trying to have a lie in)!

Unfortunately this can make a child a target for any dog that is nervous, dominant or otherwise unruly.  In the dog world, bites are the currency of correction from dog to dog.  Living in the human pack the dog still interprets us as the other dogs it lives with, albeit funny looking!!  Children are often seen as 'puppies', either in need of protection or correction.  Whilst we are freaking out that our dog has just nipped little Johnny, in the dog's mind he may have just been reminding the young upstart to leave him alone, calm down and be less excited.  From this you can see that the silent conversation between our child and our dog can get confused.

Let's take the example of a brother and sister who are fighting, whilst some dogs might hide away from this, other's might wade in and reprimand the youngsters to break up the fight.  This is because in a pack of dogs fighting amongst pack members would not be tolerated and the alpha dog would break this up, this is an accident waiting to happen and so important that we teach all family members to treat the dog in the same way so that he is very clear that his place is at the bottom of our pack.

Don't let your child tease your dog, and never leave dogs and children together without an adult, it's an accident waiting to happen! If you need any more reminding check out  http://www.dogdoright.com/kids-and-dogs.htm but please be warned the photos are pretty grim.

The Blue Dog CD is part of a research programme designed to reduce the number of dog bites to children under the age of 5 years, check out their website www.thebluedog.org  Buy the Blue Dog CD - it's worth it!
